Today I took The Internaial Federation Of Fly Fishers two hand casting exam. Al Buhr was my examiner.
I am so pleased and proud to tell you that I passed.
To all who let me give you lessons I want to say thank you. Your part in the ability to learn to teach is a key factor needed to be certified.

Juro, So glad to hear from you. I would love to get together with you and cast a bit. I live in Southern New Hampshire and could hit the Port on the flats any night the tide is right.

Sounds good! I usually Speycast on the Merrimac near where I work, big river with good current and I even had an adult salmon grab my yarn and take drag and make a gorgeous leap once There are shad and stripers there to keep things interesting as well, but most of the time I just throw yarn to focus on casting. It sounds like you've applied Spey techniques to striper fishing. I have in years past, as well as two-handed overhead - however most of the time I am guiding / sight fishing on skinny flats in mid-day sun and the single-hand rod gets the most reps. I look forward to my trips to the pacific northwest which have been as many as three in a season, when I don't even bring a single-hander. This year I am going to spend more time applying the Skagit lines to striper fishing as the compact grain designs will throw striper flies and tips with ease. I prefer long-belly casting but for practical reasons, Skagit is the way to go for applied fishing in my home waters of the cape when the tide rips and the fish are using current as an advantage over bait.

The person who has been putting the Skagits and Scandi lines to the test for salt is Jim Valle(THCI) in New Jersey. He will be on Long Island for the salt water clave that is happening in a few weeks. The only two hand work that I have done for salt is overhead casting. I spend most of my time in rivers with Skagit rigs on shorter rods down to switch. In Lawrence the spot right below the 495 bridge is easy access for river right. The boat ramp for river left. Drop me a PM the next time you are thinking of heading there and I will do my best to get over that way. Here is a photo at the boat ramp from 1990. I had a bit more hair back then. I stopped targeting the salmon after landing this one. They are now illegal to target but are still hooked by the shad and stripped bass anglers.

Awesome! I remember you mentioning this before either on the flyfishing forum or speypages. You reached a milestone in landing one for sure. I practice there often.
I'll be throwing Skagit configurations for stripers on the cape this summer, and have been fishing overhead two-handed as well. Seems to be generating more interest lately.
Where is this event on Long Island?

Dear William,
Congratulations on reaching your goal.
I'm so proud of you for continuously showing us the width and depth of this wonderful sport we all love about.
As we all know that this THCI certification takes extremely dedication and profound efforts to achieve the requirements. You worked hard and proved to yourself and everyone what a comprehensive angler is about.
I'm forever thankful for your mentoring on my CI certification and looking forward to be enlighten by you.
Best wishes for continued success.
Fond Regards,
Joe

Thank you so much for the kind words. What I have come to realize over the last week is that passing this test is just another beginning. No more than the next segment. My desire to learn more and achieve a higher status is as strong as ever. If you can even imagine I am going through withdrawal not casting 4 of 5 hours a day.
Joe, I need your help and would appreciate getting together as soon as possible. I plan to take the MCI in January at the Marlboro show and need some distance advise.
Juro, I hope you are teaching. A good friend of mine is looking to get together with you in Lawrence. Please let me know when you are ready.
Fred, I really want to get together with you and Jerry. I found your knowledge and ability very impressive in New York. I am hoping that the next time I am traveling south we can spend some time casting.
