For steelhead on the swing my favorite rod is an 8 weight TFO 13 footer. I really like the through the grip feel.

Just picked up an Anderson ACR 1248-4 and got it all rigged. Should be an excellent Skagit rod, can't wait to swing it. Headed up to NY in the next couple of weeks. Yeee-ha! Aside from this, got an 11' - 7 wt. Deer Creek switch that also needs initiating. Hoping to be able to christen them both.

My ACR has a little faster action and much quicker recovery than the rod I previously had, and I think it will be just the ticket for the type of fishing I do. Should make for a great Skagit rod. How long have you had yours, and what's that action like?

I've had it for two years but only started fishing it often this season. Took me a while to dial in the right line but it handles a 540 Skagit compact nicely with floaters and intermediates. For weighted flies and tips, I use a 575. I am no good at judging actions but I would say its somewhere between progressive action and mid-flex. And it sure is pretty!

Yeah, I really like the looks of mine too. Very pretty rod.
I set mine up with a Scand-it kit from Steve Godshall who makes lines for Gary Anderson and Bob Meiser. The kit has a 599 gr. 32.5' Skagit head, and a floating tip that makes it the equivalent of a Scandi. Don't know if you're familiar with Steve or the Scandit kit, but the beauty of it is that I can remove the floating tip making it a Skagit head. And using floating leaders, or the Zink Tip tips that came with it easily convert to Skagit style for heavier tips and flies for every kind of subsurface presentations. Very versatile.
Haven't cast it yet, and I'm kinda wondering about the grain weight of the head, but as Steve is very familiar with this rod and had the blueprint for it, I trust that this will be the right set up for this rod. He's made up three kits for me to date, and all have worked great. Anxious to do some swinging.

Rick-Please give me your opinion on the zinc. I hear that they cast far better than the tungsten. Did you get them from Steve?

Hey William, I do like them very much (better), and yes, they did come from Steve. Got a bunch in various weights and lengths. And I'm planning to get spools of 11 and 15 to make more. Since I read what Rick Kustich had to say in his book about sinking tips, I've been giving much thought to varying head/tip configurations for different applications/presentation situations. Opened me up to a whole new way of thinking about "the fingers". Got a lot of experimentation to do this season before fall arrives. Rick

"The Fingers" I assume you are referring to Al Buhr's description. When Al talks about "The Fingers" he says that our delivery line is like our hand, the tips we choose are like "The Fingers" that probe at different lengths and depths to put a fly in the fishes face.
I also watched this video from Simon that talks about a Rio product called MOW tips. These are integrated floating to sinking 10' tips for the end of the line. A good explanation of the need for different sink tips.

Yes, the "Fingers" comes from our conversation about your meeting with Al last year.
